Athletic Injuries Specialist
Dr. Lopez is a board certified orthopedic surgeon who is specialty trained in arthroscopic surgery, sports medicine and total joint replacement surgery. His practice is focused on, but not limited to, athletic injuries of the young and the aging athlete. Dr. Lopez was the founding partner of Midwest Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgical Specialists, Ltd. in 1990 and is the current President.

Team Physician
Dr. Lopez treats all sports related injuries. Dr. Lopez and his partner Dr. Odell are the team physicians for Benedictine University and St.Viator High School. In addition, he has provided care for some of Chicago’s finest athletes such as Walter Payton. His referral network extends far outside the Chicagoland area. He has patients that travel from Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin. Dr. Lopez' experience confirms that most sports injuries are best treated conservatively with a customized rehabilitation program. This non-operative approach often results in a faster recovery time and a quicker return to sporting activities.

Experienced Pioneer
Dr Lopez is a highly skilled practitioner of arthroscopic procedures. In his career, Dr. Lopez has performed more than 1500 arthroscopic ACL reconstructions and arthroscopic shoulder reconstructions. He was considered a pioneer when he performed his first meniscal allograft transplant in 1998. He credits his patient’s success to his specialized training, experience and his close working relationship with the physical therapists.

Dr. Lopez treats arthritis of the knee, hip and shoulder. He begins with a conservative stepwise approach to treating arthritis pain by utilizing medicines, activity modification, injections and physical therapy. Only after these methods are deemed inadequate, as described by the patient, would joint replacement surgery be considered. Dr. Lopez has one of the highest volume joint replacement practices in the Chicagoland area. He has performed in excess of 2000 total joint and revision total joint surgeries in his career. He is an enthusiastic proponent of minimally invasive total joint replacement surgery. Dr. Lopez almost exclusively uses this new approach due to the many patient benefits of less pain, a quicker recovery, a smaller scar and decreased hospital stay. Many of his patients are choosing to return home the same day.
